Weekly Sports Update (10/06/14 - 10/11/14)

The Ellinwood Eagle Varsity football team traveled east to Goessel on Friday night.  They came away with a 22-20 victory over the Bluebirds, bringing their record to 3-3.  It wasn’t an ideal night for football, but the rainy-cold conditions didn’t matter as the Eagles held on for a win.  The Eagles rushed out to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter with touchdowns from Tate Fisher and Jordan Duvall.  Ellinwood went into Halftime with a 22-0 lead with one more score from a Marc Waite pass to Duvall.  However, Goessel didn’t quit.  They went on a scoring frenzy with 20 points in the fourth quarter, but fell short.  The Eagles were led again by their rushing attack with 190 yards on the ground.  Junior Kaleb Schartz had 100 rushing yards on 22 attempts and junior Jordan Duvall scored one touchdown on 77 rushing yards.  The passing game was led again by sophomore quarterback Tyson Martinez.  He led the Eagles with 11 completions for 111 yards in the air with a touchdown.  Senior Marc Waite came in for one play in the second quarter and threw a 17 yard touchdown pass to Duvall.  Sophomore Tate Fisher and Duvall both hauled in a touchdown for a combined 79 yards receiving, while Schartz had four catches for 40 yards.  Defensively, The Eagles had a big night from Schartz with 8.5 tackles, Duvall with 6.5 tackles and junior linebacker Chance Baker with 6 tackles.  Ellinwood will host Central Plains (6-0) this Friday at 7 p.m.

The Eagle Middle School football team traveled to Central Plains on Thursday.  The Eagles and Oilers were both undefeated coming into the game.  Central Plains ended up victorious with a 30-12 score.  The Eagles (4-1) will host the LaCrosse Leopards on Thursday, Oct. 16th

The Eagle Lady Eagle Varsity tennis team traveled to South Barber for 3-2-1A Regionals on Friday/Saturday.  As a team, the girls placed second with a strong showing from the #1 doubles team of Rachel Doll and Danae Patton (1st place) and Mikayla Monday and Katie Shafer (3rd place).  Mattie Shafer took sixth place while playing #1 singles.  Next on the schedule is 3-2-1A State in Dodge City on Friday.

The Lady Eagle Varsity and JV volleyball teams traveled to Victoria on Tuesday for a meet.  Varsity defeated Victoria 25-15, 25-15 but lost to Central Plains 25-27, 18-25.  JV ended both matches with wins by defeating Victoria 15-11, 10-15, 13-8 and Central Plains 15-6, 15-7.  JV also traveled to Chase for a tournament on Saturday.  They left as 1st place champions of the tournament.  They defeated Wilson 25-21, 23-25, 15-13, defeated Otis-Bison 25-17, 27-25, defeated Lyons 25-16, 24-26, 15-9 and defeated Chase 25-16, 25-8.  They will host a triangular meet at the Ellinwood High School North Gym on Tuesday for Senior Night.

The Middle School volleyball team had a busy week with numerous matches.  On Monday, 7th the B-team traveled to Lyons.  They defeated Smokey Valley 22-25, 25-11, 15-9, lost to Lyons 20-25, 25-18, 15-17 and defeated Hillsboro 20-25, 25-11 and 16-14.  On Thursday, all teams traveled to Bushton to take on the Central Plains Oilers.  A-team defeated Central Plains 25-10, 25-19, B-team defeated Central Plains 25-18, 25-17 and C-team defeated Central Plains 25-10, 25-13.  A-team traveled to Macksville and took 2nd place on Saturday.  They defeated Macksville 25-7, 25-15, defeated Kinsley 25-19, 25-5, lost to Victoria 22-25, 17-25 and defeated Ness City 25-15, 26-24.  They will host LaCrosse on Thursday in the South Gym at Ellinwood High School.

The Cross Country team traveled to Sterling on Thursday.  The Varsity girls took 1st place with sophomore Joanna Strecker taking fourth, senior Abbie Reichuber taking fifth and sophomore Maddie Hayes taking 10th place overall.  On the boys’ side, senior Morgan Feemster finished 2nd overall.  The Varsity squads will travel to Kinsley on Thursday to run in the CPL League meet.
